At first, he didn’t have any interest in acting. He was only interested in sports and physical training, which is was why he majored in physical education at Kookmin University. But, by the time he graduated, he started to gain interest in acting after seeing his sister Kim Tae-hee struggling.
He then worked on his looks and body, taught himself the nuances of acting, and plunged into the show business in the early 2000’s. He made his debut in My Fair Lady in 2003, which is a remake of a successful Japanese series. Then, he found his spotlight after starring in Stairway to Heaven (2003).

Stairway To Heaven is a 2003 South Korean drama starring Choi Ji-woo, Kwon Sang-woo, Kim Tae-hee, and Shin Hyun-joon. It was aired on SBS from December 3, 2003, until February 5, 2004, every Wednesday and Thursday. It has a total of 20 episodes and was written by Park Hye-kyung and directed by Lee Jang-soo.
It tells the story of Cha Song-joo (Kwon Sang-woo) and Hang Jung Seo (Choi Ji-woo) who were already destined to be together even before they were born. This is because their parents were best friends since childhood. They even look like they are twins. Their relationship started to become complicated when Jung Seo’s father remarried and he had a new stepbrother, Han Taehwa, and new stepsister, Han Yuri. Taehwa then started to like Jung Seo and Yuri also began to like Song-joo.
But, at that time, nothing could change Song-joo and Jung Seo’s relationship, not until Song-joo had to study abroad in the United States. But, on the night of Song-joo’s return, he found out that Jung Seo had been in a mysterious hit and run accident which made her lose her memory, even of her own name. She then was taken by Taehwa who gave her a new name and life. Song-joo was then determined to make Jung Seo’s memories return and make her remember her past.
In this drama, Lee Wan played a major supporting role as the younger version of one of the lead characters, and he started to gain recognition. His acting was greatly appreciated and this was the first door for him for the successful years to come.
