Kim Myung-Min: Early Career and Debut

Kim Myung-min is a South Korean actor, most widely known for playing the title role on the KBS historical TV drama The Immortal Lee Soon Shin (Immortal Admiral Yi Sun-shin). In 2005, he was named best actor at the KBS Acting Awards for this role. Since that time, his reputation as an actor of wide range and professional dedication has grown. Playing the driven, amoral surgeon Jang Joon Hyuk in the 2007 MBC TV series White Tower, he earned the nickname Myung Min Bon Joa, meaning the true guru in acting in Korean.

Kim Myung-min debuted as an actor when he won the 6th SBS public talent audition in 1996. Over the next five years, he appeared in a number of television series in various supporting roles.

Kim’s first lead role came in the critically appraised 2001 horror film Sorum, the feature debut of the director Yoon Jong-chan, telling the story of a taxi driver moving into a decrepit building that hides several dark secrets. For this part, Kim received a Best New Actor award at the 2001 Busan Film Critics Awards and Director’s Cut Awards

Building on his new status as a lead actor, Kim started to work on several film projects, many of which ended unfinished however, mostly due to financial problems. At that time, he also suffered from injuries that were incurred while he was shooting theaction scenes.

Kim Myung-Min’s Weight Loss


Kim Myung-min lost drastic weight (more than 20kg) after shooting for his movie, My Love by My Side. Fans were shocked by his image in movie posters and his figure from the movie. Kim Myung-min is cast as Jong Woo, who has Lou Gehrig’s disease (progressive, fatal, neuro-degenerative disease) and his drastic weight loss during the course of filming, made fans highly worried about his physical health.

Kim Myung-min, who is 1.80m tall and weighs around 72kg, is known by many to have a tall, strong figure. But on this movie picture,it was showing Kim Myung-min’s shriveled body frame, has led to fans feeling sad for him. The picture showed Kim Myung-min lying on a bed, and you can clearly see his ribs protruding from his body. This picture was an effect of Kim Myung Min losing over 20kg for the movie, without the use of any CG.

Born and raised in South Korea, he attended the Seoul Institute of the Arts. In 2004, he and his wife, Lee Kyung-mi, welcomed a son named Jae Ha.
