Pre-Debut and Early Life

Nam Ji-hyun, born in Seoul, South Korea, on January 9th, 1990, has always aspired to stand on stage ever since a young age. She auditioned for JYP Entertainment, one of the top 3 entertainment companies in South Korea, but was rejected. Her dreams, however, didn’t stop there as she was instead sent to Cube Entertainment after being recommended to Hong Seung-sung, Cube Ent.’s founder, by JYP’s recruitment department.

Cube Entertainment, who at the time was planning to debut a new girl group, took Nam Ji-hyun under their care and announced that she was going to become 4Minute’s leader only six months after her entrance to the company.

Music Career

Ji-hyun started her career with the girl group 4Minute in 2009. She was introduced as the second member, after Hyuna, on May 22nd, 2009, and was positioned as leader and vocalist. On June 18th, 2009, 4Minute debuted on Mnet’s M Countdown with the title track “Hot Issue”. The group debuted with a bang and was met with such a high popularity that on June 21st, their van was raided by fans who wanted to get their clothing and other items.

Only a few months after their debut, 4Minute received their first award, Inkigayo Mutizen Award, for their first mini-album For Muzik (2009), released on August 20th with the title track “Muzik”.

The demand for 4Minute was not only present in Korea but also internationally, starting from the collaboration with the American artist Amerie for her song “Heard ‘Em All” (2010). In the same year, 4Minute, under Universal Music Group, launched an international version of its album while additionally touring Taiwan, the Philippines, Japan, and Thailand. On May 5th, the group made their official debut in Japan with the song “Muzik” and held their first concert on May 8th, 2010.

2011 was the peak year for 4Minute. They received a Bonsang Award at the 20th Seoul Music Awards and the K-pop New Artist Award for 2010 at the Billboard Japan Music Awards. In March, the group released the digital mini-album Heart to Heart followed by their first full-length album 4Minutes Left in April. They came out with the title track “Mirror Mirror” which consists of a rather provocative choreography. The broadcasting company threatened to ban 4Minute from performing the song on major music programs until they change the choreography, which they did, resulting in a satisfactory achievement by charting at number 2 on the Gaon Chart.

2013 and 2014 were a busy period for the five girls of 4Minute as they participated in the 2013 United Cube Concert tour at venues in China, Korea, and Japan from January 26 to February 21, 2013. Shortly after, 4Minute, teamed up with Brave Brothers and released two singles back to back, “What’s Your Name” on April 26th and “Is It Poppin’?” on June 28th. Both songs received wonderful responses from the public, securing high spots on music charts. In 2014, 4Minute released the mini-album 4Minute World with the title track “Whatcha Doin’ Today?”. The song was a great hit and became the first 4Minute song to debut at number one on charts, beating other girl groups such as 2NE1 and Girls’ Generation.

2013 was also the year when Nam Ji-hyun braved the music industry by herself. After starring in the drama Love for Ten – Generation of Youth, she and her fellow bandmate Jiyoon released an OST titled “Only You” for the drama.

In 2015, 4Minute released “Crazy” which debuted at number one on Billboard’s World Album Chart. The international fame eventually led to their collaboration with the international artist Skrillex. The collaboration birthed the song “Hate”, released on January 20th, 2016. The song appeared to be their last song as a group after they revealed that the group would be disbanding after a failed negotiation on the majority of the members’ contract renewals with the company. On June 13th, only five months after their last song was released, the group disbanded.
