It was reported that 2PM’s contract had come to the end of the period in January 2018. It was after the group had extended their contract in March 2015 for three years until the end of January 2018. On January 16th, according to Soompi, Wooyoung revealed in an interview, that he himself had extended his contract. However, it was still uncertain for the rest of the members whether they would re-sign the contract. “The members might each have their own thoughts, but I don’t think that will cause any issue for 2PM,” he said. He also expressed their support for each other regardless of their decision later. “Respecting ourselves as individuals is the right choice for 2PM, I think. We promised each other that no matter where we go in the future, we’ll protect 2PM,” he added. Meanwhile, at the time, Taecyeon started his enlistment and the others were busy with their own schedules so the agency was still discussing with them.

On January 31st, 2018, JYP announced that Wooyoung, Junho, Nichkhun, Jun.K, and Chansung renewed their contracts with the agency. As Taecyeon was still in the military, they will wait for him to return and discuss the renewal of the contract.

According to Soompi, later, on July 24th, it was reported that Taecyeon has signed with another agency 51K. It is an agency that houses So Ji-sub and has been transforming from one-man agency to multi-faceted acting company for publishing, music, and broadcast. The agency expressed their gratitude towards Taecyeon’s decision to sign with them as they have acknowledged him for his music and acting career. 51K also assured fans that they would fully support the artist and his activities with 2PM in the future. “As many fans have shown him love for a long time through 2PM’s group activities, we will also do our absolute best so that he may continue pursuing 2PM’s activities with JYP Entertainment,” they said. They also promised to do their best for the artist so he could shine even more not only in Korea but around the world.

On the other hand, a source from JYP stated that even though Taecyeon has signed with another agency, he is still part of 2PM. “Despite his move to a new agency, Taecyeon will continue promoting with 2PM. JYP Entertainment will be in charge of managing 2PM’s [group] promotions,” they said to news outlet Maeil Business. It’s a relief for the fans because that means 2PM will still continue as a six-member band.

Taecyeon: Enlistment and Discharge

Taecyeon was the first member to enlist in the military. He started his enlistment on September 4th, 2017, right on 2PM’s 9th anniversary. He previously hinted about his enlistment date in July through Twitter but no one got it that time.

On September 4th, JYP announced that the artist would be enlisting into the recruit training center of the White Horse Unit in Gyeonggi Province at 2 p.m. KST later that day. The location and the exact time of his enlistment were not revealed previously due to his personal wish to enlist quietly, only with his family and 2PM members. The members posted pictures celebrating their 9th anniversary and Taecyeon’s farewell party.

After moving agency in 2018, Taecyeon was officially discharged from the military on May 16th, 2019. The event took place in Ilsan, Gyeonggi province. There were reporters and fans who waited for him outside the venue. According to Soompi, the artist expressed that he was nervous because it’s been a long time since he last showed up in front of cameras so he was not sure what he looked like at that time. He also thanked the fans and said he didn’t know that there would be so many people who would wait for him so he promised to bring something good in the future.
